Newsletter 82-February 3rd 2023
Prayer of the Week:
What will this year bring?
We do not know;
It will bring its usual times of work and play,
Experiences of success and failure,
All the things that are part of school life.
It is a new beginning;
The planting of a seed that will grow for a year,
The seed of fruit that will blossom in times to come.
It is new hope;
Hope for good work, for successful results,
For friendships, for fun, for learning.
In this coming year, may there be learning, prayer and fun.
May there be hard work, faith and friendship.
May no one in this school be lonely;
May no one be left out in class;
May no one suffer through the others here.
As we begin this year in hope, in prayer and in friendship,
May the Lord begin it with us, be with us during it,
And successfully bring it to its conclusion.
Amen
Principal's Report:
Welcome,
Welcome and Welcome Back
It is very exciting to begin a new school year. As Principal it is my pleasure to welcome and welcome back all of our new and continuing students, staff, and families. It is always very special to welcome our Foundation class which this year is made up of 21 students from both new and existing families. It was wonderful to see so many families on the school grounds this week at drop-off and pick-up times. It really makes the school feel alive!
As well as our new Foundation students, we also welcome the Goodes and Repper families to the St Patrick’s community. Jarli and Maya Goodes are joining us in Grades One and Four respectively, while Monti Repper is joining us in Grade Five. I have no doubt that they will be made to feel most welcome.
Sadly we say goodbye to Noah Dunn and the Abraham family of John, Daniel, Monica, and Grace who are returning to Melton. We wish all of them along with our graduating class of 2022 all the best on their educational journey.
On a staffing front, it has been great to welcome Josh Cunningham to our Middle Learning Community as a classroom teacher. Josh is a recent graduate of the Australian Catholic University and is very eager to begin his teaching career. In March we will also welcome Marnie Portelli who will be joining us as a release and sport teacher in the Junior Learning Community on Wednesdays.
We also welcome back Lauren Sharp who has been on maternity leave. Lauren will be teaching on Mondays in the Middle Learning Community in a boost and release role. It is wonderful to begin the school year with a full and settled team.
Opening School Mass
To mark the beginning of the school year we will hold our Opening School Mass on Tuesday, February 7th at 10 am at the Church. All students will be walking to and from the Church to attend the mass. Families and members of the parish are also welcome to attend.
Uniforms
As we begin the year, I wanted to remind everyone of the uniform expectations at our school. All students are expected to come dressed in complete school uniform including black shoes or boots. Boys should wear grey socks and girls white socks. For both boys and girls, hair below shoulder length needs to be tied back or trimmed. Jewerly is limited to plain sleepers or a single small stud and a suitable religious cross on a necklace. No nail polish is allowed.
Hats are also required during outside play and sports lessons in Terms One and Four. All uniform items including hats are available for purchase at Mensland and the school also runs a uniform bank of second-hand items.
With Faith in our Future

Visible Learning
We are excited to be starting our second year in partnership with Corwin Visible Learning. This professional journey started last year and will continue for the next two years. We will be learning and implementing Visible learning which is a research based approach to developing life-long learners. It is based on the research of Professor John Hattie and his metastudies involving over 300 million students and what has the most impact on student progress at school. Visible learning research explores seven core strategies for learning success: working together as evaluators, setting high expectations, measuring learning with explicit success criteria, establishing developmentally appropriate levels of learning, viewing mistakes as opportunities, continually seeking feedback, and balancing surface, deep, and transfer learning.

Learning Dispositions
This year at St Patrick’s we have identified five learning dispositions - Dispositions describe a persons inclination to use particular skills when faced with problems to solve, ideas to evaluate or decisions to make. At St Patrick’s we are calling these St Patrick’s Learner Superpowers. These are qualities that successful learners use in their everyday life, self - motivated, curious, resilient, collaborative, risk-taker. Our students will be focusing on learning super powers this week and over the course of their time at St Patricks will be guided and supported to apply these skills in the classroom and their everyday life.
School Assemblies:
It is fantastic to have our Friday school assemblies happening. Our assemblies happen each Friday afternoon starting at 2:50pm in the school hall. Students are dismissed from the hall on this day. We invite all our community to come along. This week's assembly will be hosted by Mr McAloon. There will be representatives from each classroom showcasing their learning on St Patrick's Learner Superpowers.
Why have a school assembly?
The intention behind implementing a regular whole school assembly is to develop a feeling of unity and a positive school culture among the students, staff and our St Patrick’s community. Simply put, gathering together strengthens the way our school works. Whether singing a song together, watching a performance by fellow students, sharing class learning or sharing events that have been happening in our community, our goal is to create camaraderie, ignite school spirit and help instill students and families with a sense of belonging. School assembly provides students with the opportunity to develop their confidence by speaking and sharing their learning and thoughts.
Each learning community will take a turn throughout the term to host assembly and showcase their class learning. Coming together to celebrate success, showcase learning or strengthen commitment to shared goals is time invested in making St Patrick’s a special place to be.
Professional Development:
At St Patrick’s Primary School we are committed to Professional Development of our team. At various times staff members will be working off site which may result in classroom teachers being out of the classroom. We will endeavor to make note of this in the newsletter whenever possible.
