Newsletter 74- October 28th 2022
Prayer of the Week:
We remember in prayer:
Those whose lives have been disrupted
Those who are feeling vulnerable and weak
Those who are facing both long-term and short-term needs
Those who are homeless
We pray also for all those who are meeting needs at this time:
Volunteers and community workers
Those working to people
Those working to clear roadways and homes that have been damaged
Police officers, emergency personnel, medical and social welfare responders
We make all our prayers in the name of Jesus, who reached out always to those most in need.
AMEN.
Principal's Report:
Welcome,
Mission Month
This October, as a Catholic school we are celebrating World Mission Month, a month dedicated to the life-giving work of missionaries around the world. This year, we walk hand-in-hand with the Church of Ethiopia and the local communities towards providing life-changing opportunities to those most in need.
Pope Francis, in his 2022 World Mission Sunday message, invites everyone to answer the call to be a missionary, sharing that "Mission is carried out together, not individually...".
At the school level, the students have been learning about World Mission Month as part of our Religious Education learning program. Our Senior students have also been busy organising ‘Socktober’ activities which will be held on Monday, October 31st.
‘Socktober’ cultivates the passion of students to rise up, engage their local community and take action against poverty. It provides young people in Australia with the opportunity to lead in mission, encouraging them to think not only of what they will do to help, but why they will do it.
On Monday we ask that students come dressed in their favourite (and most colourful) socks. The senior students will be running a number of fun activities for all students. If possible we ask that students bring along any spare change for the sock-filled activities, however, you can definitely still join in without a coin donation.
Staffing Announcement
It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you that unfortunately, Natalie Hughes will be leaving us at the end of the year. Since joining St Patrick's at the start of 2021, Natalie has been a real asset to our school. She was very quickly able to build connections with students, staff, and families. Natalie is a skilled educator and will be sorely missed.
Natalie has accepted a position at Lisieux Catholic Primary School in Torquay. She said that she has thoroughly enjoyed her time at St Pat's, however, was keen to move back to the Geelong area to be closer to her partner Paul. We wish Natalie all the best in 2023. I will commence the recruitment process for a replacement teacher in the near future.
Master Plan
This year I have been consulting with the architecture firm Morton Dunn to develop a building master plan for the school. This process has been informed by feedback received from the students, staff, and families of the school through surveys and discussion sessions.
The areas of the school that need upgrading came through very clearly but finding innovative design solutions has taken a little longer. Russell Hawkes from Morton Dunn has provided a number of different options and ideas which members of the school community have then provided feedback on.
As we are becoming very close to a final outcome, I wanted to provide families with an opportunity to look at the designs that were presented and offer any suggestions. If you have any questions or have any great ideas please feel free to contact me. The designs are provided below in both floorplan and 3D versions.

Wellbeing:
Imagine that every child has a cup that needs to be filled – with affection, love, security, and attention. Some seem to have a full cup most of the time, or know good ways to get a refill. But most children get a little nervous when their cups get near empty…… How can I help my child fill up their cup? (Please see the picture attached above). As we enter Term 4 and shift towards the end of the school year for 2022, people's emotional cup is slowly emptying. This is a gentle reminder to continue to be kind and compassionate towards others and yourself.

End of year celebration - Save the date
Wednesday 14th December, 2022.
Our next community celebration where we can come together will be to celebrate our end of year and Grade 6 Graduation. It will be an evening to celebrate learning, strive for personal excellence and celebrate our achievements. It will also be a chance to say goodbye to our grade 6 students and families that will be leaving at the end of 2022.
Students will begin working on a classroom Christmas presentation that they will perform on the night. We hope you can join us in celebrating a terrific year of learning and teaching and growing together as a community of learners.
More details to come.
Senior M:
Written by: Lulu, Grace, Isabelle and Torah
Maths: On Tuesday, students in grade 5 and 6 completed their Pat M tests. Every student did incredibly well and improved so much since our last Pat tests in April. Some students also completed the year above them for Pat Maths as an extension. By Grace
Reading: In 5/6M we have been reading a novel called “Trash” which is based on three boys in the Philippines living in a town called “Behala”. They are boys that pick up trash for a living and solve problems. We also had our Pat R tests which we all received fantastic results. By Lulu
Writing: We wrote a descriptive paragraph or more about our personal “Special Place”. Some of us managed to put these paragraphs in a book which we may read to the foundation class. By Lulu
Inquiry: Our main topic in inquiry lately has been Individuality and how we as people can be individuals. We also discussed and shared what we thought the creation story meant to us. ByLulu and Isabelle
Spelling: During Spelling we’ve been learning about prepositions, at the beginning of the lesson we had no idea what they were until Ms Comitti told us we use them everyday in our Writing. By Isabelle
Religion: An upcoming event is 'Socktober', socktober is a day where you bring a gold coin donation. Our grade sixes will be hosting some events for the day, the activities are played using socks. To play you will need a coin, if you don't have any you can still play, but we would really appreciate it if you bought a donation to help raise money for Ethiopia.

Happy Diwali to our Hindi faith families.
Diwali, also known as Festival of Lights, is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals, commemorating the victory of good over evil. Diwali means ‘row of lamps/lights’ and refers to the rows of lamps celebrants place around their homes or on top of temples.
St Vinnies Winter Food appeal
Please find following an email we received from Stawell’s St Vincent de Paul Conference regarding our recent non-perishable food donation:
“The Stawell conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society thanks all the school families who have been able to donate groceries towards helping those in need in our community. Your kindness helps us to help approx. 200 families in need each year. When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully everyone is blessed. Thankyou for blessing us.”
Mary-Rita Thomas Stawell St Vincent de Paul Conference
Fundraising: Every Friday our Social Justice group will be selling Zooper Doopers for $1.00 each.
October is World Mission Month, a month dedicated to the life-giving work of missionaries around the world. This year Catholic Mission is raising money for local communities in Ethiopia to help provide life-changing opportunities to those most in need.

October is World Mission Month
What is mission month?
Here in Australia, October marks World Mission Month, a celebration of the global work of the Church and the dedication of missionaries, both religious and lay, as they reach out and support children and communities in need around the world.
Catholic mission strives to empower school communities by celebrating and engaging with mission through a Head, Heart and Hands model (pictured above):
Head - our knowledge
Heart - deep reflective thinking
Hands - ability of us as individuals and community to be a positive difference in the world.
Monday October 31st - Socktober activities for Catholic Mission Ethiopia fundraiser.
We are celebrating Catholic Mission with a Socktober event which our Grade 5/6 are busy organising. Why socktober? In reality many children around the world are not as fortunate as us to have balls to play with. Socktober weaves the value of sports games but also reminding students that we have the power to change injustice and imbalance in the world.
Activities will take place in the 4th session on Monday. Students are encouraged to wear colourful or crazy socks to promote Socktober.
If possible students are asked to bring along some coins to participate in the activities. Games range from “sock cricket”, “sock puppets”, “sockthrow’, “foxy socks”, “sock dodge”, “sock catch” and lots more.
All money raised will go towards Catholic Mission Ethiopia appeal.
As always we thank our St Patrick’s community for your support.
