Newsletter 63- July 29th 2022
Prayer of the Week:
Last week's Gospel reading was from Luke 11: 1-13 where One of his disciples said to Jesus, ‘Lord, teach us to pray.’” At school we invite our students to pray Our Lord's Prayer/ Our Father.
Following is the Lord's Prayer but with a description next to each line outlining what it is we are actually praying for.
Our Father which art in heaven means we're praying to our father who is in heaven.
Hallowed be thy name is next and it means holy is your name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. If we think about where God lives, we know its pretty great. The Bible says that in heaven there will be no more crying, God will live with us, and there will be no hunger or hurt there.
This part of the prayer says let your kingdom come. This means we are praying that people would live in peace and love with one another the way it is in heaven. It reminds us that we should be living the way God wants us to everyday.
Give us this day our daily bread means give us today all that we need. Even though we pray for things we need, that doesn't mean we'll get them. There are still people with no food in many parts of the world but that doesn't mean we stop praying for these things.
And forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. This next part of the prayer is asking for forgiveness for our mistakes. Forgiveness means that we are sorry for something we've done and we don't want to do it anymore. But we also need to forgive people who have done wrong to us. Sometimes others hurt us very badly, so we need to ask God to help us forgive them because it's really hard or we don't want to. If we forgive others, God will forgive us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Is it sometimes tempting to do something you're not supposed to? This part of the prayer is really neat because it asks God to help us to know the right thing to do. To protect us against the evil that is in the world and keep us away from it.
Principal's Report:
Welcome,
Mary MacKillop Award
Last week at assembly we re-introduced the Mary MacKillop award. This came about after a staff professional development session with Jim Waight from Catholic Education Ballarat looking at the history and charism of our school. Jim shared an overview of the story of Mary MacKillop and the Sisters of Saint Joesph and the role they played in setting up schools including St Patrick’s Stawell.
All staff took lots away from this session both those who are well versed in this history and those who are new to these stories. What struck a real chord with me was how Mary MacKillop and the Sisters were out in the ‘real’ world rather than behind the walls of a convent. This desire to be out in the world helping those most in need meant that Mary MacKillop and the Sisters often clashed with the Church authorities. But it is also what made them so effective in their role.
Through our session with Jim, the staff looked at ways in which we could acknowledge Mary MacKillop and use her story to help inspire the students at St Patrick’s. A number of staff mentioned that in the past the school had awarded a Mary MacKillop Award so after finalising some details we have re-introduced the award.
The guidelines for the award are below:
Mary MacKillop lived a life dedicated to her faith and serving the needs of others. Wherever and however she could, Mary MacKillop did everything possible to improve the lives of others. This award acknowledges the thoughtful actions of the students at St Patrick’s to help others.
Staff nominate students who they see going out of their way to help others and each week one nomination is selected and the student is presented with the award at assembly. The student who wins the award will be presented with a Mary MacKillop badge. Our first recipient was Evie Field from Foundation.
Happy Birthday Liz
This week we celebrated a very special birthday for one of our dedicated classroom helpers, Liz Driscoll. Liz had a milestone birthday on Thursday and we shared a cake with her when she was in at school on Monday. A big thank you to Fiona Harney for organising the celebrations. Liz and our army of classroom helpers have such a wonderful impact on our school. If you or someone you know is able to offer some time to help out at school please contact the office.

Wellbeing:
Going to school everyday is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school everyday. Attending and participating in school will help your child develop:
- Important skills and knowledge to help them learn
- Social and emotional skills such as good communication, resilience and teamwork
- How to deal with challenging and unfamiliar/uncomfortable situations
Tips to help improve your child’s attendance at school
- Talk to your child about school and how important it is. You can ask them how they feel about school, what they liked and if there are any issues/problems they may be having.
- Set a good example. Show them how you keep to your own commitments.
- Encourage your child to take on hobbies that they enjoy such as sport or a musical instrument. This will help them develop positive relationships outside of the classroom.
- Have a set time to go to bed
- Leave all technology out of the bedroom.
- Pack their school bag the night before with everything they need.
- Have a set time for breakfast.
- Plan to meet up with friends so they can walk through the gates together.
If you or your child are having trouble with the morning transition to school please make contact with me and I can help support you through the challenging times.
Here at St Patrick’s we want all of our students' time at school to be positive so they can achieve their personal best for their learning goals, social wellbeing and emotional wellbeing.
Thank you.

STEAM expo - Wednesday 7th & Thursday 8th September, 2022.
St Patrick’s Primary School Hall
Parents and community members are invited to attend the Expo to view a variety of creative projects completed by our students this year.
Time to be advised.
What is STEAM?
Steam is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. STEAM education focuses on the foundation skills of developing science, technology, engineering, and art learning, promoting problem solving, critical analysis and creative thinking skills.
The expo will incorporate students STEAM learning over the course of the year.
So how do you incorporate STEAM into your child’s world? Surprisingly, you are probably already doing this every day. Have you ever cooked with your child at home? Think about all of the STEAM moments that were happening:
- Adding a cup of flour / oil / water = Maths (capacity and volume)
- Adding an ingredient one by one, such as three eggs = Maths (numbers, counting and one-to-one correspondence)
- How are we going to get the eggs out of their shell? = Engineering
- Mixing different ingredients and observing the outcome = Science
- Using senses to see, touch, smell, taste and hear = Science
- Was the recipe from a book or was it from an online source? = Technology
- Placing the mixture in the oven and watching it rise = Science
- How many cupcakes did we make? = Maths
- How can the cupcakes be decorated? = Art
Book Week:
The theme for this year is: Dreaming with eyes open…

The highlight of book week is on Friday 26th August where students are invited to dress as their favourite book character with a whole school parade where our community is able to attend.

Middle H:
The students have settled back into learning beautifully for the beginning of Term 3. We have been focused on following the school values: We are Safe, We are Learners and We are Respectful.
In Reading, we have been using learnt skills to find word meaning in context and also using clues to make inferences. Also, we have been reading the text ‘The Witches’ and undertaking a variety of reading comprehension activities. The students on the lookout for ladies who might be witches in disguise!
In Writing, we have been learning how to write a narrative using the topic of ‘FLY’ as inspiration. The students came up with so many wonderful ideas that they shared with their peers which have made some interesting stories indeed. Students have focused on starting their story in the action to try and hook the reader. They have also been learning how to use dialogue in their writing to make it more interesting.
In Grade 3 and 4 Maths, students have been learning about measurement with a focus on the area of rectangles. The Grade 3 students are using base one blocks to help calculate area whereas the Grade 4 students have learned a formula that they can use to calculate area.
In Religion, we have been learning about the word respect and what that means in our lives. Students shared ways that we could treat others how we want to be treated.
In Wellbeing, we have introduced the concept of being a CHAMP in the classroom. Students discussed what they think makes a champion before finding out what the acronym stood for. We are learning to challenge ourselves, to have a go, to use our strengths, to learn from mistakes and to persist.
Living in Faith:
Please keep our 15 children (below) who are preparing for their Sacrament of Reconciliation which will take place on Wednesday 3rd August 2022 at 5:30pm.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation in the past has also previously been called Confession. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of two sacraments of healing in the Catholic tradition (the other being the Anointing of the Sick). Reconciliation celebrates God’s love and mercy towards us. It is about acknowledging and naming those times when we know we have done wrong, and then making peace and restoring the relationships with those who have been affected by our poor choices.

With less than 5 weeks to Father’s Day, we are putting the call out for helpers now.
There are 3 areas you can help us with. They are listed below:
- On Thursday 1 Sept (for a couple of hours) in the morning to help with the stall. Selling wrapping etc. It is fantastic to see the children selecting gifts for their loved ones.
- Prepare the gifts for sale – this will be done a week or two before the event. We will also assess if we have enough gifts. A huge thanks to Nicole, for an amazing job gathering and preparing the gifts to date.
- Suggestions for gifts – we all know the male figures may require an annual update of underwear and socks but our budget doesn’t extend that far. Gift suggestions of about $5 would be greatly appreciated, please send to Libby
* On another note – Nicole is unavailable for these events as a result Libby is coordinating both events. If you think you can assist in anyway it would be greatly appreciated, please contact Libby.
