Principal's Report:

Dear St Patrick’s community,
Last Wednesday, it was delightful to meet the families of our Foundation students at our BBQ. I was impressed by the parents' level of engagement as they introduced themselves to one another, fostering the community aspect of our school. We have had our start of Year Mass and first with Father Neville. Father Neville has invited us to mass again for Ash Wednesday. This is a change from previous years where we have had a liturgy at school. All are welcome to attend with many students participating in reading.
Swimming Sports
On Friday of next week we will hold our annual Swimming Carnival which is a real highlight of the school year. As you would be aware, for events like this to be successful it takes the efforts of lots of different people. I would like to thank everyone in advance for helping out to make sure the day runs smoothly. Please help the Parents and Friends Group by getting the form back in a timely manner so food can be purchased.
Here is a brief timeline for day:
9:30 am - Middle and Senior students will head to the pool via bus
10:00 am - Swimming events begin
12:00 pm - Sausage sizzle lunch served in class groups.
12:15 pm - Junior students will head to the pool via bus to watch.
12.30 pm- Juniors are eating.
1:30-2 pm - Event finishes, students are able to go home with their parents. Students not collected will head back to school via bus for 3:10 pm dismissal.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews are being held on Wednesday, February 26th. Bookings can be made via PAM on the SimonEverywhere App. Parent Teacher Interviews provide a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and development. Countless studies have shown that a family’s engagement has a direct positive impact on a child’s learning success. When families are engaged in their children’s school lives, students have the home support they need to develop a lifelong love of learning.
School Advisory Council
The Annual General Meeting and first regular meeting for 2025 of the School Advisory Council (SAC) will be held on Tuesday 25th February at 5.30 pm in the school. If you would like to join the SAC please contact me via email - principal@spstawell.catholic.edu.au.
It is an excellent way to engage with the school and learn more about the operations that are important to us. A particular focus in 2025 will be our building process with the new Foundation classroom, toilets and playground.
Kind blessings,
Bettina

Wellbeing:
Mindfulness for Families: Building Connection and Calm in the Home
At school, we use mindfulness after break times to help students transition back into a focused and calm state, preparing them for the next learning session. After the excitement and physical activity of break time, students can feel restless or distracted, making it harder to concentrate. A short mindfulness practice can help them refocus, regulate their emotions, and settle into a more attentive, balanced mindset. This same practice can be just as beneficial for families at home.
Mindfulness is the art of being present in the moment, helping to reduce stress and foster connection. Here are a few simple ways to bring mindfulness into your family routine:
1. Mindful Breathing
Start the day with a few minutes of deep breathing. Sit together, close your eyes, and take slow, deep breaths. This can help everyone feel calm and connected before jumping into the day’s activities.
2. Gratitude Circles
At mealtime or bedtime, ask each family member to share one thing they’re grateful for. Focusing on gratitude helps shift attention away from stress and brings everyone’s attention to the positive.
3. Mindful Eating
Encourage everyone to eat slowly, savoring the flavors and textures of each bite. This practice promotes mindfulness and helps avoid rushed or mindless eating.
4. Nature Walks
Take a short walk outside, paying attention to the sights, sounds, and smells of nature. Walking together in the fresh air allows everyone to reconnect and ground themselves in the present moment.
5. Mindful Listening
Take turns listening without interruptions. When one person speaks, others listen attentively, focusing entirely on the speaker. This helps improve communication and strengthens family bonds.
By practicing mindfulness together, your family can enjoy a sense of calm, improve communication, and build deeper connections. It doesn’t take long—just a few minutes each day can make a meaningful difference in creating a peaceful and intentional home environment.

Auslan:
Hello Everyone,
This year we are embarking on our ‘Expand’ year of Auslan learning. Students take part in 3-4 lessons each week learning new signs and phrases that allow them to communicate with others using Auslan, with one of the sessions being online with our wonderful Auslan Language Assistant, Jane Hage. Jane also visits with us in person twice a term and often comments on how engaged our students are with learning the language.
As well as our Auslan lessons each week, we also encourage the students to use the signs they have learned in their daily school life. Many students are now proficient in asking to go to the toilet in Auslan and are able to greet others and staff using Auslan signs.
Currently the students are working on units relating to greetings, questions and how facial expressions are important in conveying meaning and feeling while signing.
This week Lexie and Emila are going to show us the Auslan signs for A B C D E & F.
Enjoy

Senior R:
In Senior R we have had a busy start to the year with swimming! We have had five lessons continuing to learn how to swim and a lot of us were out of breath at the end. On the playground everyone has been playing different games including; sprouts, cricket, rope games and soccer.
In Literacy, we have changed the structure of our reading and writing. We are reading War Horse and it is about World War 1 and the story is told from the horse’s perspective. The Horse’s name is Joey. We have changed the structure as it is new and Mr Moloney and Miss Ryan are about to change it again so we can use our Superpowers more.
In both Grade 5 and 6 maths, we have been learning decimals, multiplication and formal algorithms.
In Religion, we have been learning about Nedd Brockmann and his commitment to running 1600km’s in 10 days, 10 hours and 36 minutes. He ran the distance but didn’t break the record.
In Art, we have been learning about the colour of the year which is mocha mousse and we had to mix colours to make it and whoever is closest will win a chocolate. We have also been learning about National Women’s Day.
In Science, we have learning about habitats and biotic and abiotic factors and in Inquiry we have democracy.
In Performing Arts we have been learning about different dance styles and how they have evolved over the years.
In our preparations for assembly Miss Ryan called Brain Breaks, Break Breaks and now it is a class joke. Besides that, Brain Breaks have been super fun. Some we have been doing are Cup Competition, Don’t Get Caught, Pac Man, Hoop Challenges, Colour Challenges and Opposite Simon Says.
We are looking forward to Swimming Sports, Maths Olympics, Harmony Day but mainly camp!

Living in Faith:

Fundraising:
Each Friday till the end of Term 1 our MiniVinnies group will be selling Zooper Doopers for $1.00 each St Vincent de Paul Sponsor a student program. As always we thank our St Patrick’s community for your support.
Why do we at St Patrick’s raise money for the poor?
Catholic schools participate in the Church’s mission “to bring the Good News to the poor” (Luke 4:18). In partnership with parents, parishes and other agencies within the Church and the broader community, Catholic schools are called to give witness to a faith which does justice with love. All have a responsibility to read the signs of the times and to respond with love and compassion, ever seeking to protect human dignity and serve the common good. The Catholic Church teaches that the poor represent those who are marginalised in society. Jesus himself taught the importance of helping those who are poor and need help.
Jubilee Year
This year is a jubilee year. Pope Francis has set the theme of the 2025 Jubilee Year as Pilgrims of Hope. In ancient times, a jubilee year occurred every 50 years and involved the cancelling of debts, a period of rest for people and the earth, and land being restored to the landless. Now, in The Catholic Tradition, ordinary Jubilees Years are celebrated every twenty five years.
Jubilee years invite Christians to set out on a journey and to cross boundaries. When people travel, they do not only change places physically, but also possibly change within themselves.

https://cafod.org.uk/news/uk-news/why-is-2025-a-jubilee-year-in-the-catholic-church
In his explanation of the the theme Pilgrims of Hope, Pope Francis reflects:
Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring. Even so, uncertainty about the future may at times give rise to conflicting feelings, ranging from confident trust to apprehensiveness, from serenity to anxiety, from firm conviction to hesitation and doubt. Often we come across people who are discouraged, pessimistic and cynical about the future, as if nothing could possibly bring them happiness.
For all of us, may the Jubilee be an opportunity to be renewed in hope.

Do you know someone who is doing it tough?
Please ask them to come to The Cottage 20 Sloane St Stawell. We are open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 10:30am and 12:30pm. For out of hours emergencies ring 0408038949.
